KDP Headquarters hosted a 28-member delegation of principals from Taiwan. The group is interested in learning more about leadership of American schools and the professional organizations, like KDP, who recognize and support top educators.

Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) awards are bestowed upon deserving chapters at Convocation every two years. The ACE Award that Huntington University won in 2005 was the chapter’s second ACE award, and it’s shooting for one in 2007 as well. ACE awards are difficult to earn; a chapter must submit a portfolio which is reviewed according to specific criteria. For more information, check out the ACE program Web page at www.kdp.org/services/ace/main.php.

The KDP chapter at Indiana University/Purdue University–Indianapolis has strong chapter leaders and always has its eye on an ACE Award. The chapter constantly seeks ways in which to improve so that its members continue to benefit from belonging. The ACE Award is a good way to recognize members for their hard work and efforts.

For its Reading Is Fun project, Northern Arizona University asked its members to donate two books and make a recording as they read the books aloud. The books and CDs then were put into decorated tote bags which were given to children at a local food center. The chapter also hosted a party featuring a puppet show and bookmark making when they donated the literacy bags.

“April Fools and Reading Tools” was the theme of the University of Southern Mississippi’s Reading Is Fun project. Members of this chapter manned decorated stations—each of which had a reading focus—in the children’s section of the public library. Each child left with a goody bag and two books to read and keep.

Adelphi University hosted an I TEACH Regional Conference in spring 2006. The conference featured wonderful speakers who presented dynamite workshops to new and preservice teachers. Attendees came from Baltimore, MD, from upstate New York, and all the way from Lock Haven, PA to network and learn. Jason Kamras, the National Teacher of the Year, was the keynote speaker.

Many of the workshops at the Adelphi I TEACH conference were packed because the topics being discussed were so popular. This photo was taken at the workshop “The Month of September: Strategies, Tricks, and Activities to Reduce the Confusion and Stress of the First Month of School.” Information and materials were given to attendees to take with them and use in their classrooms.

The KDP Convocation is held every two years in different locations around the United States. In November 2005, it was held in Orlando, FL, and featured fabulous keynote speakers and over 180 workshops on a variety of educational-related topics. Workshops generally were interactive, with handouts and materials that attendees could use in the classroom.

Convo is a major networking experience for teachers, students, and professionals from California to Maine. Friends are made and, every now and then, our silly side shined through.

Mount Saint Mary College hosted a Chapter Leadership Summit in spring 2006. The chapter officers and counselor prepared well for the event and made attendees feel it was a valuable leadership training experience. Attendees traveled from as close as nearby New Paltz, NY and all the way from Philadelphia, PA.

The first Professional Chapter Academy was held on June 10 at KDP Headquarters.
