Dr. Alfredo Artiles is Dean of Graduate Education and the Ryan C. Harris Endowed Professor of Special Education at Arizona State University. His scholarship focuses on understanding and addressing educational inequities related to the intersections of disability with other sociocultural differences. His work aims to advance policies, personnel preparation programs, and inclusive educational systems in diverse contexts.

Artiles’ interdisciplinary scholarship studies the ways cultural practices and ideologies of difference mediate school responses to students’ abilities and needs, examining special education placement practices as a window into schools’ cultural constructions of difference. His research also focuses on teacher learning for social justice, and how teachers learn to use a social justice perspective as they teach diverse students.

Dr. Artiles has published extensively for research, policy, and practice audiences in education, psychology, and related disciplines, with his work published or reprinted in several languages. He is co-editor of the International Multilingual Research Journal and edits the book series Disability, Culture, & Equity.

Among his influential educational involvement, Artiles served on President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. He is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and served as Vice President of AERA’s Division on the Social Contexts of Education, was a Spencer Foundation/National Academy of Education Postdoctoral Fellow, and a Resident Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford University).

Dr. Artiles has been an advisor/consultant to organizations or projects such as Harvard’s and UCLA’s Civil Rights Projects, the National Academy of Education, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (Brown University), the Council for Exceptional Children, the American Association on Mental Retardation, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. He was selected the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education Foundation.
