Dean of the Graduate School of Education, University of California at Los Angeles; Professor of Education, University of Washington

PhD, University of Chicago

Author of: Planning and Organizing for Teaching (1963), The Changing School Curriculum (1966), Facing the Future: Issues in Education and Schooling (1976), A Place Called School: Some Prospects for the Future (1984)

Dr. John Goodlad (1920–2014), an influential educational researcher and teacher, was invited to the Laureate Chapter in 1976. During his illustrious career, Goodlad undertook notable research initiatives, including a 5-year study of teacher education as well as a 4-year study of U.S. schools, considered one of the most extensive on-site examinations ever undertaken. It culminated in the book A Place Called School, which received the Distinguished Book of the Year Award from KDP. Goodlad taught at every level, from a one-room primary schoolhouse to university professorships and administrative positions.

Along with publishing 80 book chapters and more than 30 books and 200 journal articles, he was a past president of the American Educational Research Association and, in 1993, received that organization's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Educational Research.

Though highly lauded with these and other major awards in the educational field, colleagues mentioned most his “love for his students, mastery of his field, the courage to speak truth to power, and integrity.”
