Dr. Ana María Villegas

Dr. Ana María Villegas is Professor in the Department of Secondary and Special Education and Director of the PhD Program in Teacher Education and Teacher Development at Montclair State University.

Villegas teaches courses in teacher education policy and research, culturally responsive teaching, and sociocultural perspectives on teaching and learning. Prior to joining MSU, she was a Senior Research Scientist with the Division of Education Policy Research of Educational Testing Service. She also has taught at the University of Colorado, Denver, in the Department of Language, Literacy, and Culture. Dr. Villegas began her career as a teacher in the New York City Public Schools.

Specializing in the education of racial/ethnic and language minority students and in the preparation of teachers for diversity, Villegas has conducted studies of culturally responsive teaching, policies and practices in the education of immigrant students, instructional tracking, effective instructional practices in bilingual classrooms, increasing the diversity of the teaching force, and strategies for transforming teacher education for diversity.

Among her myriad honors, Villegas was named a Fellow for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in 2012. In 2005, she received AERA Special Recognition as Annual Meeting Program Chair. Villegas received the Margaret B. Lindsay Award for Distinguished Research in Teacher Education by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in 2004.

Villegas was invited to join the KDP Laureate Chapter in 2015.
