Dr. Joel Westheimer

Dr. Joel Westheimer is University Research Chair in Democracy and Education at the University of Ottawa, and education columnist for CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning and Ontario Today shows. He is co-founder and executive director of Democratic Dialogue, a research collaborative dedicated to democratic ideals in education and society.

Known for his work in citizenship education, social studies education, social justice, and politics and education, he has written multiple award-winning books, including Pledging Allegiance: The Politics of Patriotism in America's Schools. He is recipient of the Canadian Education Association’s Whitworth Award “for education research that matters,” and a Knight Fellow for Civic Engagement in Higher Education.

Dr. Westheimer publishes widely in newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals, and addresses national radio and television audiences on networks such as C-Span, NPR, and CBC Radio. He is a frequent lecturer and has delivered more than 200 keynote speeches at conferences, public events, and universities.

A former musician, Westheimer grew up in New York City. He received a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and began his career in education in New York as a public middle school teacher. He earned his doctorate from Stanford University and, before arriving at Ottawa, taught at New York University, the University of Toronto, and Stanford University. He now lives in Ottawa, Ontario, with his wife, two children, and their dog, Farley. During winter, he and his wife ice-skate to and from work.

Kappa Delta Pi invited Westheimer to join the Laureate Chapter in 2015.
