About relationships with KDP

Faye Snodgress shares . . .

When we think of Kappa Delta Pi, our rich legacy of honor and excellence in education comes quickly to mind, but at heart, KDP is a caring community of special people who work to make the world a better place. As such, we are all touched and saddened when tragedy impacts any part of our community. Our thoughts are with our members at Union University in Tennessee, where tornadoes recently devastated the campus, and at Northern Illinois University, which is now grieving the senseless loss of numerous young lives. We reach out to offer comfort and support to our fellow Kadelpians, their colleagues, and students as they work to recover and heal from their losses.

As spring arrives, the staff at KDP Headquarters is working on new initiatives that will provide new member services—including a members-only area on our Web site and a more personalized Web experience. Stay tuned for updates in the next KDP News.

KDP is beginning to plan for the centennial celebration, and we want to hear from you. Within our membership, we have such a rich and diverse range of talents, experience, and expertise; and everyone has something to offer the larger community. We invite you to embrace the future of the organization along with us and help design the plan for KDP’s next 100 years by sharing your tips and ideas, inviting a colleague to join, serving on a national committee, or participating as a leader of a local KDP community. If you’re not sure how to get involved—or you have a unique idea you’d like to share—e-mail us directly at membership@kdp.org.

When I envision the future of KDP, I am reminded of the wonderful quote from Margaret Mead, KDP Laureate: “Never underestimate that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world, indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

There will be many opportunities in the days ahead for KDP members—thoughtful, committed people—to come together for the common good, whether that good involves preparing new teachers, responding to a crisis, publishing new research in education, or sharing what they’ve learned in the classroom. We are grateful for your companionship as we travel this road together.

Upcoming e-Chapter Events
Whether you work with college and university students, K–12 students, or other educators, you always have a home here within the KDP community. One way KDP reaches out to include all members—whether you are a Professional Member or part of an institutional chapter—is through e-Chapter events. The e-Chapter events are call-in and log-on presentations about important topics in education. These flexible, convenient, and free events are hosted by experts and provide certificates of participation, and they make it easy for you to stay connected to KDP’s dynamic educational community. Through e-Chapter, you have the luxury of participating by simply calling in where you are, as you are—at your computer desk or in your easy chair, dressed in a business suit or your pajamas!

Here are a few of the upcoming e-Chapter topics. Go to the e-Chapter Web page for more information and to register for an event. All events begin at 8 P.M. EST. After you register, you will receive additional information about the events.

Road to Recovery at Union University
As you may know, in early February, the city of Jackson, Tennessee was devastated by horrific hurricanes that ravaged the area. Union University was particularly affected by this disaster, leaving administrators, faculty, and staff scrambling to find housing for more than 1,100 students. Many continue to deal with the stress of the events and, unfortunately, some students are suffering delayed trauma. While university officials have put physical and emotional well-being first, they continue working to try to ensure that the students’ basic needs are met.

Nancy Cherry, Counselor of the Omega Lambda Chapter of KDP at Union University, shared, “I’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from Kappa Delta Pi.” She has received e-mail messages from members throughout the country asking what their chapters can do to help. Basic necessities are still needed—items such as bedding, towels, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant. Dorm students are now living off campus, so any microwavable food is also highly appreciated.

Dr. Cherry commended Union’s President, David Dockery, for his response to this crisis—the second devastation of this nature he has managed during his tenure.
Any help is appreciated. If you or your chapter would like to donate items or gift cards for this relief effort, please contact one of the following:

Conference at Mercyhurst College
“We had 137 students attend our conference! We had 18 presenters doing workshops, and a panel discussion of 8 first- and second-year teachers. The best part, in my opinion, was that the event was nearly 100 percent student-directed! They learned so much about organization and leadership. Hooray!”
–Dr. Ruth Auld, Counselor, Mercyhurst College, Erie, PA

Initiation at Miles College

At the Miles College initiation ceremony of the Alpha Delta Nu Chapter in Fairfield, Alabama are (from left): Dr. Rosalind Pijeaux Hale, Chair and NCATE Coordinator , Division of Education; Dr. Karen Nicholson, KDP Society President; and Ms. Griena Knight, Dean of Students.

“I definitely would encourage others to join KDP. KDP has been an incredible experience for me, and it is the memories of what I have done and enjoyed that will always be with me. It is also an awesome source for a teacher. Lesson plans, activities, and so forth are always needed, and KDP’s Web site has all this for you. The relationships that are built through KDP are also a reason to join KDP. With the friendships built, you know you are never by yourself. You always have someone there for you, and it is the greatest thing in the world when you know you have someone to rely on.”

Best Regards,
Gary Wong, Elmhurst, NY

Some of the Hofstra walkers for Autism Speaks.
Theta Beta Chapter
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY
Counselor: Dr. Blidi Stemn
President: Toni Lana
Finding a cure for autism seemed a bit closer to reality following the Long Island Walk Now for Autism held on October 14, 2007, which proudly raised nearly $15,000 for this worthy cause. KDP Theta Beta Chapter President Toni Lana organized a team of 50 graduate and undergraduate students to participate in the walk, among them KDP chapter members and members of Special Education Graduate Association (SEGA), for which Toni also serves as president. The greater Hofstra University community also participated in fund-raising for the walk, with support from the Hofstra bookstore and Lackmann dining facility.

Theta Beta is certainly a chapter to watch. In other community service efforts, the chapter shared more than 150 cans of food with the Interfaith Nutrition Network’s soup kitchen in Hempstead, donated more than 140 new children’s books for the children of the Hempstead Boys & Girls Club, and collected more than $200 for the KDP Scholarship Fund.

North Central Indiana Professional Chapter
Indianapolis, IN
Counselor: Tiffany George

The North Central Indiana Professional Chapter received a $1,000 Literacy Alive! grant this year to complete its 2008 Spring program. The chapter has been working with the Concord Neighborhood Center, which serves families that are at or below 50 percent of poverty and also can be categorized as the working poor. Given such low income, it is difficult for the families at the Center to have access to books in the evenings, so this KDP chapter has been meeting with the children to promote the importance of reading. Statistics state that a child must be read at least 1,000 books before he or she can read without assistance. Also, studies have shown that children lose interest in books around the fourth grade.

During each visit at the Center, book selections are read and a short craft or activity is completed based on the child’s age. For example, Dr. Seuss activities may be completed with the younger students while the older students enjoy a readers’ theater selection based on books written by Christopher Paul Curtis. Due to the length of the young adult books, activities for older students are based on their favorite book and a short readers’ theater or introduction of the noted author is presented. Book selections from each one of the noted authors are donated to the Center. Once the books are donated, the children are able to check out the books overnight to take home and read with their parents. So far, the program has been successful, and the Concord Neighborhood Center is grateful for the help and support.

The chapter’s Literacy Alive! grant was among 59 awarded (at various dollar amounts) to KDP chapters this year, under the sponsorship of Verizon. To apply for next year’s grant monies, chapters must submit proposals in early December. Visit the Literacy Alive! page on the KDP Web site for more information.
